About this group
This group is sharing knowledge and experiences and collectively working on development of new tools and approaches for the urban context.
The Federation Secretariat and American Red Cross (ARC) have been leading an Urban Collaboration platform (UCP) since early 2016, with strong support from several National Societies (NSs), the RCRC Climate Center and Global Disaster Preparedness Center (GDPC). UCP aims to help RCRC National Societies to be better informed, better connected and better engaged in understanding and working in urban context.
The first output of this process was the Urban Assessment Workshop hosted by the Danish Red Cross in Copenhagen on 20-21 June, 2016. The participants of the workshop expressed a strong interest in expanding this kind of collaboration to other topics related to urban resilience and disaster risk reduction. Building on this momentum, and in cooperation with the Norwegian Red Cross a second workshop was organized in Oslo for 2 days 18-19 May 2017.
There have been other important initiatives within the RCRC building up to the UCP. The GDPC (Global Disaster Preparedness Center) organized three regional workshops in Bangkok, Arusha and Panama in 2013. These workshops while highlighting existing challenges, set a vision for urban resilience for RCRC National Societies. The Iranian Red Crescent Society (IRCS) in cooperation with the IFRC has implemented a Urban DRR initiative in five cities (Jakarta, Yerevan,Tegucigalpa, Nairobi, and Tehran) leading to the International Seminar on Urban Disaster Risk Reduction and Management in Tehran, 3-7 May 2015.
