Philippines Typhoon Yolanda: Cash in Emergencies
On November 8, 2013 the strongest cyclone to ever hit land devastated the islands of the Philippines. Typhoon Haiyan, locally known as Typhoon Yolanda, affected 16 million people, displaced 4.1 million people and took the lives of 6,300.
Through the tireless work of the Philippine Red Cross and IFRC efforts (supported by American, British and Danish Red Cross), the cash transfer programme was able to reach 58,704 families within the first four months. Cash has become an effective tool in relief and focuses on enabling and empowering communities.
