Improving food security in West and Central Africa

Food security plays vital role in improving the livelihood of people. It is one of the main sources of nutritional welfare, a guarantee of good health as well as a factor in reducing poverty.

Improved food production along with increased incomes allows communities to reduce the impact of crises that could fall on them.

The IFRC, International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies supports Red Cross Red Crescent National Societies to assist local communities in setting up long term food security programs. These programs are carried out in a participative way where communities actively manage their own development projects.

The IFRC has initiated innovative multi-disciplinary community based food security projects in Mauritania, Niger, Guinea and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
