Mandy George is a senior humanitarian adviser and independent consultant with more than 20 years’ experience supporting humanitarian policy, preparedness, response, recovery, coordination and system strengthening. She has worked extensively across the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, as well as with UN agencies, NGOs and environmental organisations, and has more than six years of field experience, including extended assignments in Myanmar and Haiti.
Mandy specialises in environmental sustainability, climate change adaptation, disaster risk reduction, community engagement and accountability, and humanitarian innovation. Her work focuses on translating policy and technical commitments into practical tools, guidance and operational approaches. She has led and contributed to initiatives exploring innovative approaches to disaster preparedness and humanitarian action, including the use of immersive and mobile technologies, social media for community engagement, and simplified approaches to environmental assessment.
Her recent work includes leading the Global Shelter Cluster’s environmental portfolio, managing the development and field testing of the NEAT+ environmental screening tool, serving as technical adviser to the evaluation of DG ECHO’s Greening Humanitarian Aid policy, and acting as thematic lead for environment in the Sphere Handbook revision. She has also supported the development of global standards, guidance, training and learning initiatives across the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement and wider humanitarian sector.
Mandy holds an MA in Environment and Development Studies from King’s College London and has worked across more than 20 crisis-affected countries in Africa, Asia, the Middle East and Latin America.
