PHAST, as Explained by a Community Facilitator in Northern Belize

Participatory Hygiene and Sanitation Transformation (PHAST) helps communities improve their hygiene and sanitation practices, which ultimately helps to improve their health. In this video, one of the community facilitators from Trial Farm, Belize, gives a quick summary of what PHAST is all about.

The Belize Red Cross organizes PHAST trainings in various communities as part of the Resilience in the Americas (RITA) project, with support from the American Red Cross. Community volunteers are trained as facilitators and then teach the skills to others. Training focuses on personal and household hygiene, disease prevention through sanitation, among other topics.

An inclusive training, PHAST involves everyone from the community, including children, the elderly and people living with disabilities. Because the methodology is based on drawing, coloring and learning-by-doing, anyone can learn the basic concepts that PHAST teaches. The training helps to bring communities closer together, as they learn and practice new concepts.

Providing PHAST trainings helps build community resilience by positively impacting community knowledge, health and the organization.
