World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction

The GDPC and a wide variety of partners are gearing up for the 3rd World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction (WCDRR) which will be held in Sendai, Japan March 14-18, 2015.

The GDPC will be present at the WCDRR and will showcase project activities at the booths of the IFRC, USAID, UNESCO, and GAD3RES. If you are in Sendai and want to connect, please contact us at gdpc@redcross.org.

UN-ISDR, ADRRN, the IFRC, and other partners are hosting an online forum for messages of comitment to the WCDRR and the expansion of the global agenda on risk reduction and resilience.

GNDR’s Reality Check

The Global Network for Disaster Reduction has luanched the Reality Check campaign to challenge governments and otehr stakeholders to turn the Post-2015 DRR Framework into action at the frontline.

Steps you can take:

  1. Review GNDR’s Reality Checklist for Impact at the Frontline.
  2. Read about the launch of Frontline, a global participatory action research programme of work that gathers local risk knowledge and priorities that can be used for risk profiling and monitoring.

  3. Follow the conversation online on Twitter and Facebook and take part in it by using the hashtag #GNDRrealitycheck in your tweets and facebook posts.
  4. Learn more about the Reality Check campaign.

The 3rd World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction in March 2015 is expected to attract around 8,000 participants with several thousand more participating in public-related events linked to the World Conference.

Showcasing Innovation: Media and Communication for Disaster Risk Reduction

A joint initiative of BBC Media Action, Global Network for Disaster Reduction (GNDR), Netherlands Red Cross, Plan International, and the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR).

Have you used media or communication to help communities at risk become more aware of disaster risks and build their resilience?  If so, we want to hear from you as we aim to showcase creative and effective approaches of media and communication at our event which will take place at the Third UN World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction in Sendai, Japan on 16 March, 2015.

We’re interested in receiving examples that are:

  • Innovative
  • Have reduced disaster risk and improved resilience
  • Can be replicated by others as good practice
  • Are specifically targeted to people who are at risk of hazards

A number of organizations have already been holding policy discussions and providing analysis on the development of a successor to the HFA as well as on the integration of disaster risk reduction in the Sustainable Development Goals and the climate change agenda.
