Peru Pillow Case Presentation / Presentación Mi Funda de Almohada Cruz Roja Peru
Example of a Pillowcase Project presentation in Peru. (In Spanish)
This video case study documents the international adaptation and pilot implementation of the Pillowcase Project in Peru, a child-focused disaster preparedness education program originally developed by the American Red Cross. Building on nearly a decade of successful implementation across the United States, the Global Disaster Preparedness Center (GDPC) developed a model curriculum enabling Red Cross and Red Crescent National Societies worldwide to adapt the program to their own cultural and hazard contexts. The project uses pillowcases and other locally appropriate containers to engage school-age children in hands-on preparedness activities, teaching them to assemble emergency supply kits and build life-saving readiness skills.
In 2014, the Peru Red Cross piloted the localized version of the program — Mi Funda de Almohada — across four provinces with elevated disaster risk. Volunteers were trained to deliver adapted curriculum presentations in schools throughout these provinces, reaching over 2,000 students by December 2014. The pilot demonstrates how a globally designed preparedness framework can be successfully contextualized for national implementation within the RCRC network.
The video combines interview footage, live presentation recordings, and aerial imagery to provide a compelling account of the program’s rollout and its tangible benefits for participating students and communities. Produced by Quimera and funded by Disney, it serves as both a program documentation tool and an evidence resource for National Societies considering similar adaptations.
