Shelter: Nepal communities learn earth-quake resistant building

  • Nepal farmer Les Bahadur Raut built his two-storey stone house in Dolakha district himself in the 1970s. It was damaged in the 25 April 2015 earthquake and collapsed in the 12 May earthquake, killing his elderly mother. He has signed up for training offered by the Nepal Red Cross Society, with support from the Swiss Red Cross, in carpentry and masonry so he can build back safer.
  • The earthquakes damaged or destroyed more than 900,000 houses, leaving people without shelter against monsoon rains, summer heat and winter cold. The 24-month earthquake response plan from the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) includes a sizeable shelter component, which will include training in earthquake-resistant construction techniques. The training will not only help people rebuild their own houses in a safer way, it also gives people marketable livelihoods skills in the mammoth rebuilding effort.
